During these upcoming winter months, we find ourselves coming down with nasty colds and flus. We start sniffling, coughing, and loosing our energy. I'm here to tell you that this doesn't have to happen. If you focus on these 5 ways to stay healthy this winter, you'll have the tools to combat unwanted viruses and bacteria.
Garlic is such a strong antibiotic and antiviral. I recommend at the first sight of sniffles, to eat 1-3 cloves or raw garlic per day until symptoms are gone. The best and most potent way to do this is to cut up the clove, then let it sit for 10-15 minutes so that the enzymes start to react. Then, chase down the chopped up clove with a glass of water. It can also be used many times per week as a preventative.
Cook with Bone Broth
Bone broth is very high in protein and it helps to strengthen our blood. In Chinese medicine, we think of blood as our barrier; almost like the brick on a brick house. The stronger the barrier, the less likely unwanted pathogens will attack us and go inside our body. Cooking with onions in the broth or another form of protein like check is a wonderful way to strengthen our immune system. Also, to eat for meals when you are sick. This will speed up the recovery time.
Get Enough Sleep
Even though we all know this, I cannot stress enough how important it is. Sleep plays such a major role. Not getting enough sleep will definitely get you sick. When you are sick, it is important to get more sleep than usual. Take a break from your work and just rest. Drink enough liquids, and sleep for hours! You will wake up feeling so much better.
Protect Yourself from Cold Weather
When going outdoors when it's cold, always make sure to cover yourself, especially around the neck and shoulders. The energetic channels running along the neck and shoulders are prone to invasion. This means that pathogens like to insert our body here. Always wear a scarf!
Get Regular Acupuncture
Getting regular Acupuncture not only increases your immunity, but it can also help you fight off a cold. Doing this with herbal medicine treatments will strengthen your barrier, or help you get over sickness faster.
Acupuncture for children is a great choice.
Just like adults, acupuncture and Chinese Medicine can highly benefit children. Here are a few main things that acupuncture can help with for babies, toddlers, and young children.
Acupuncture is amazing at treating pain. This includes back pain, neck pain, joint pain, and many more. Children are involved in lots of sports, and with this high activity their comes injuries. When I was a child I was involved in gymnastics and constantly was injuring my ankles and wrists. Acupuncture can speed up the healing process for many injuries. This will help them get back to doing what they love a lot faster.
Children are in daycare and school, which allows them to become sick a lot more often than we want them to be. They are easily exposed to lots of bacteria and viruses. A good way to be active with their health is to get regular acupuncture treatments to boost their immunity. When doing this, they are less likely needing antibiotics from the doctors office that can be harmful to their bodies.
This can include food allergies or environmental allergies. Acupuncture for children can keep these allergy symptoms like sniffles, cough, and congestion low. Overall, it decreases inflammation in the body. In my clinic we have a product called Allergease. Allergease are yummy tasting suckers that children love! They can suck on these often to help deal with allergy symptoms.
4. Bed Wetting
Many children even at older ages deal with wetting the bed. This can be a frustrating thing for both the parents and the child. Acupuncture for children and Chinese herbal medicine can combat this habit so they sleep soundly without wetting the bed.
At Healing Vibes Acupuncture & Wellness we love children! We have a discounted rate for their services! Schedule an appointment today!
Moxibustion is a therapy in which a common chinese herb known as Mugwort is used. Their are many forms of "moxa" that can be used during treatment. Moxa is always warmed, which brings out it's many vibrant and healing properties. When moxa is warmed, it burns with an infra-red light. The frequency of this infra-red light is an extremely healing one. It is used to both treat and prevent diseases. The heat is applied to the moxa on various acupuncture points on the body depending on the treatment.
Now I am going to mention something about moxa that is the most fascinating to me. After burning moxa on the acupuncture point known as "ST 36", which is located on the lower leg, it actually triples the bodies white blood cell count! This happens within 10 minutes of burning the moxa on the point. This has been proven by a scientific study done in recent years. This also means that moxa is a powerful tool to use to increase the immune system. White blood cells are important in keeping our immune functions up and working properly. When our immune systems are down, our white blood cell count can be down. For instance, moxa has been used in the treatment of HIV and AIDS, were the white blood cell count is found to be extremely low.
Moxa's role in immunity is very fascinating, but their is actually another truly amazing thing it can do that not many people know about. It is used to treat breeched babies! When moxa is burned on an acupuncture point known as "UB 67", it can actually help turn the baby for proper delivery. This is so important for pregnant women to know, because this treatment could potentially save them from getting an unwanted C-section.
Treatment Can Come in Many Forms
Classification of moxa includes "direct moxa" and "indirect moxa". Direct moxa is placed directly on the acupuncutre point on the skin's surface. Indirect moxa is not placed directly on the skin. Indirect moxa includes some powerful and common insulaters, ginger, garlic, and salt. To describe this a little better, the insulater (let's say garlic), is put onto an acupuncture point on the body, and then moxa is burned on top of that. When used with ginger, it can treat weakness of the spleen and stomach causing diarrhea, abdominal pain, and painful joints. When used with garlic, it can treat scrofula, skin ulcers, and poisonouse insect bites. When used with salt, it can treat abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, hernias, cold limbs, and excess sweating.
What are the functions of moxibustion?
-warms the energetic meridians and pathways of the body
-increases circulation and the flow of energy and blood
-strengthens the body's "yang", which is important in many metabolic processes in the body
What can moxibustion treat?
-Low Immune Function
-Insect/ Snake Bites
With the change of seasons, we can all use a boost to our immune systems. Along with proper diet, low stress, and getting enough sleep, we can use Chinese Medicine to prepare for the change of seasons. Many people count on Acupuncture for the Immune System. These amazing treatments include Moxibustion, Acupuncture, and Chinese herbs.
Moxibustion is a Chinese herb called Mugwort, which is safely burned during treatments on specific acupuncture points on the body. A really amazing scientific fact about this herb is that when used on these acupuncture points, it actually triples your white blood cell count within 10 minutes! These white blood cells are what your body uses to help fight against many viruses and bacteria in common colds, flues, and other respiratory disorders.
Chinese herbs have truly amazing properties that help strengthen the immune system. Most commonly used in my clinic is the formula Immune +Plus. This herbal formula has the herbs Astragulus and Ganoderma Mushroom just to name a few. These two herbs are very powerful at keeping your body balanced, and keep you from getting sick! This formula is taken a few times per day in capsule form. It’s also great to take when traveling, a time when we are confronted with many germs on airplanes and in airports.
Using these powerful natural medicine modalities to prevent our bodies from getting sick is much safer than getting sick and resorting to antibiotics. Antibiotics harm the digestive system, making it even easier for us to get sick next time around.
Along with Chinese herbs, diet can play a major role in our immune system! Here is a great example of a smoothie to make at home which will definitely benefit our immune systems.
Immunity Booster Smoothie
2 handfuls of spinach or kale
½ of a lemon (peeled)
Tip of your thumb size nodule of ginger
¾ cup berries of your choice
3 ice cubes (optional) (it's better to keep our bodies warm and not ingest too much cold foods during the winter months)
